Welcome to OakLeaf Coaching.

Grounded in lived recovery. Driven by personal goals to inspire change.

Addiction is rarely the real problem. It is usually a symptom of something deeper. As an Addiction Recovery Life Coach I help people understand the reasons behind the behaviour, break the cycle that keeps them trapped, and build a life where addiction is no longer needed.

The missing piece

“Recovery is not simply about what addiction took away. Recovery is also about understanding what addiction gave you.”

Most people can identify the damage. Fewer stop to ask what purpose addiction served, and what emotional need it met, what pain it helped them avoid. Until those questions are explored, recovery can remain fragile.

About me

Lived experience. Recovery. Personal growth.

I'm an independent life coach. I'd like to tell you about my journey through addiction. Over three decades of personal experience and recovery. One from gambling, which I believe is one of the most misunderstood addictions. I've dealt with alcohol, drugs, and others. I came to see how addiction can turn sideways. From one addiction to another. I came to see addiction was just a symptom of a much deeper problem.

I kept jumping onto a recurring loop that kept me stuck in addiction. Addiction to me is about deep emotional wounds. Childhood traumas, unresolved issues. Addiction was a way to numb myself from reality. I had been on a journey of deep misunderstanding. I was looking for something. Anything. Escape. External to fix me. I came to see there's no external answer to an internal problem. My internal journey has been painful, but amazing. I wouldn't change it. From disconnection to connection. Helping others is my greatest reward.

  • People are far more than their addiction.
  • Addiction does not define a person's worth.
  • Understanding is more powerful than judgement.
  • Recovery is a journey of self-discovery.
  • Lasting change happens when you understand what addiction gave you.

Why this is different

A different kind of support

Understand the why

We explore what addiction gave you, not only what it took. Until that question is answered, recovery stays fragile.

No judgement, ever

My role is not to judge, diagnose or tell you how to live. It is to help you see the patterns keeping you trapped.

Accountability that sticks

Practical, action-focused sessions with honest accountability between them, not endless dwelling on the past.

Private and personal

For people who don't want fellowships or treatment centres, and want a discreet, one-to-one path instead.

Speaking to an audience about addiction and recovery

The real problem

Addiction is the symptom, not the problem

Addiction is not a lack of willpower. Many people genuinely want to stop. They promise themselves and their families, feel deep shame afterwards, and still return, because addiction operates on an emotional level, not a logical one.

It may start as entertainment, but over time it becomes about:

Escaping stressAvoiding painful emotionsManaging anxietyCoping with lonelinessSeeking excitementNumbing emotional painChasing self-worthAvoiding reality

The cycle that keeps people trapped

Without understanding this cycle, people can stay caught in it for years. Recognising where you are in it is where change begins.

Underneath the behaviour

What is often hiding behind addiction

Childhood trauma, emotional neglect, grief, anxiety, low self-worth or a fear of failure. The behaviour is visible; the wound underneath often stays hidden. True recovery explores both, with honesty, not blame.

  • Childhood trauma
  • Emotional neglect
  • Family dysfunction
  • Loss and grief
  • Low self-esteem
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Fear of failure
  • Feelings of inadequacy

Talks & awareness

Sharing this message where it matters

Alongside one-to-one coaching, I speak in schools, conferences, workplaces and recovery communities about addiction, trauma and personal growth, helping people recognise the warning signs long before the damage is done.

If you would like me to speak to your school, organisation or group, please get in touch.

If fellowships aren't for you

Many people benefit from fellowships and treatment programmes. Others simply do not feel comfortable attending, and prefer something private and personal.

Recovery coaching offers guidance, accountability, education and encouragement for those seeking a different path. It does not replace medical or psychological care when that is needed. Recovery is not one-size-fits-all. The important thing is finding a pathway that works.

Recovery is more than abstinence

  • Understanding yourself
  • Developing emotional awareness
  • Building resilience
  • Improving relationships
  • Creating healthy routines
  • Managing stress effectively
  • Finding purpose and meaning
  • Learning self-respect
  • Building a life you no longer need to escape from
